Map of local debt indicators

The impacts of the financial crisis and the subsequent recession vary significantly at the local level, and it is local partnerships and services that are in the front-line of dealing with the debt problems, mortgage repossessions and insolvencies that have resulted. Despite this, there are few tools available to local partners to assist them in planning provision and assessing their performance relative to other areas.

As a first step towards addressing this we have developed an interactive map that can be accessed from the logo in the bottom left of this site. This takes you to a dedicated mini-site which maps all currently publicly available data relating to debt at the local level. The site enables you to identify debt hotspots and provides information on trends at the local authority level over time.

The map currently provides debt indicators down to a local authority level in England and Wales, including mortgage possession claims, mortgage possession orders, and insolvencies broken down into bankruptcy orders and IVAs.

The site also provides a time series chart in the bottom right hand corner and allows authorities to be sorted and ranked.

To provide context for the information on debt problems, we have also included a series of indicators on unemployment and worklessness, as well as information on earnings relative to house prices.

A full set of instructions to help you get the best from the maps is included on the 'Help' section of the mini-site.

We are now investigating the availability of datasets for Scotland and Northern Ireland and hope to be able to improve the site further as more data becomes available. In the meantime we look forward to receiving any feedback you have about the mini-site, which should be sent to info@responsible-credit.org.uk
